The breach had been running for weeks. We found it on day one.

    The Trigger

A financial advisory firm had recently signed with PRETERION for managed IT support. They were pleased with the proposal, comfortable with the process, and — as they mentioned in their final onboarding meeting — broadly confident in their security posture. They believed they were, by and large, doing fine.

On the first day of deploying PRETERION’s tools and policies into their Microsoft 365 environment, an alert fired. A user account was showing active login activity from an overseas IP address. The account belonged to a staff member who hadn’t travelled anywhere.

    The Challenge

The investigation confirmed what the alert suggested: the account had been compromised. A staff member had clicked a link in a phishing email weeks earlier, silently handing their credentials to an attacker. For that entire period, the breach had gone undetected — no monitoring, no alerting, no policies in place to flag the anomaly. The attacker had access to emails and files across the business.

For a firm holding sensitive client financial information, the exposure was serious. The business now faced not just a security incident, but a legal and regulatory one.

    The Solution

PRETERION moved immediately to contain the breach — isolating the compromised account, revoking active sessions, and blocking the attack vector before any data could be exfiltrated. The timing was fortunate: the breach appeared to have been automated, and the attacker had not yet acted on their access. The window to stop it had almost closed.

From there, PRETERION coordinated with a specialist cybersecurity firm brought in to conduct a full forensic audit, supported the business through its legal obligations — including mandatory notification to the relevant government regulatory body — and then deployed the complete Microsoft 365 security suite across the organisation. Conditional access policies, multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, and ongoing monitoring were all implemented and configured. Staff completed security awareness training with a focus on identifying phishing attempts.

The business that had believed it was doing fine now had the posture to prove it.

    Before / After

    Before PRETERION:

    • No security monitoring or alerting in Microsoft 365
    • No multi-factor authentication enforced across user accounts
    • No conditional access policies — overseas login from an unknown device raised no flags
    • Active breach running undetected for several weeks
    • Staff with no formal training in identifying phishing emails

    After PRETERION:

    • Breach detected and contained on day one of onboarding — before data was exfiltrated
    • Full Microsoft 365 security suite deployed: MFA, conditional access, endpoint protection, alerting
    • Forensic audit completed; regulatory notification obligations met
    • Organisation-wide phishing awareness training completed
    • Ongoing monitoring in place — anomalous activity flagged automatically

    Benefits

    • Breach contained before any client data was lost — avoiding what would have been a significantly more serious regulatory and reputational outcome
    • Full compliance with mandatory data breach notification obligations under Australian privacy law
    • Security posture transformed from reactive and invisible to proactive and monitored
    • Staff now equipped to recognise and report phishing attempts before they become incidents
    • Business operates with documented, enforceable security policies for the first time

    Client Quote

“We thought we were on top of it. We weren’t — and we had no way of knowing until PRETERION’s tools went in. The timing could not have been closer. I don’t want to think about what another few weeks would have looked like.”

A private cloud built in 2012 that outlasted the platforms that were supposed to replace it.

    The Trigger

The local Australian arm of a large European printing company had a file-sharing problem that was quietly costing them sales. Their quoting process depended on Excel spreadsheets shared across a geographically distributed sales force — and the legacy VPN holding it together was slow, unreliable, and increasingly difficult to manage. The business knew it needed a better solution. What it didn’t know was that the solution they were about to implement would still be running more than a decade later, long after the platforms that seemed like the obvious alternatives had come and gone.

    The Challenge

With sales teams spread across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane, the business needed a way to keep quoting files current, accessible, and accurate — regardless of where a sales rep was working. The legacy VPN created friction at every point: slow transfers, version conflicts, and access problems on the road. Productivity was suffering, and the risk of a rep quoting from an outdated file was a real commercial exposure. At the same time, the company was acutely aware of the risks of handing sensitive commercial data to third-party cloud platforms — in 2012, that instinct was ahead of the market.

    The Solution

PRETERION designed and deployed a private cloud solution built on Synology NAS devices, installed at each of the three branch locations. The devices synchronised continuously across sites, ensuring every location always had a complete, current copy of the data. Smart user permissions — managed by group rather than individual — meant that staff at each location accessed only what was relevant to them, without complex access requests or IT intervention.

Combined with mobile and laptop applications, the sales force could work on live files from anywhere: in a client meeting, between offices, or from home. For the first time, the business had a file infrastructure that matched how its people actually worked.

The solution worked so well that the European parent company adopted it and deployed it globally.

    Before / After

    Before PRETERION:

    • Legacy VPN causing slow transfers, version conflicts, and access failures in the field
    • Sales reps regularly quoting from outdated files — a direct commercial risk
    • No resilience across sites — a single point of failure for critical commercial data
    • IT team managing access on a per-user basis with no scalable permission structure

    After PRETERION:

    • Seamless file access from any device, at any location, online or offline
    • Three synchronised NAS devices across Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane — full redundancy
    • Group-based permissions rolled out in days, self-managing from that point forward
    • Solution adopted by the European parent company and deployed globally
    • 10+ years of continuous operation with no platform migration required

    Benefits

    • Eliminated quoting errors caused by version conflicts across the sales force
    • Full data redundancy across three cities — loss of any single site causes zero disruption
    • Total cost of ownership significantly lower than SaaS alternatives over a 10-year horizon — NAS hardware maintained properly routinely exceeds a decade of service life
    • Sensitive commercial data remained on infrastructure the business owned and controlled — no third-party cloud exposure
    • When the parent company later adopted Office 365, the NAS solution ran alongside it without conflict — and when the business began moving away from Office 365, there was nothing to migrate in the file space

    Client Quote

“We evaluated the cloud platforms everyone was talking about at the time and decided against them. What PRETERION built for us was faster, cheaper to run, and completely ours. Thirteen years later, that decision still looks right.”

  • From a virus call to a 15-year technology partnership on Sydney’s North Shore.

From a virus call to a 15-year technology partnership on Sydney’s North Shore.

    The Trigger

In 2010, a kitchen renovation business on Sydney’s North Shore had a virus problem their IT company couldn’t solve. After days of failed visits from the incumbent technician, the business was still down and running out of patience. One of their designers — a personal contact — quietly asked the owner for permission to let PRETERION connect remotely. Within minutes, the problem was resolved. What happened next changed the relationship entirely.

    The Challenge

The business was running on break-fix IT support: reactive, undocumented, and entirely dependent on a single technician with no formal methodology. With 20 staff and over 80 contractors regularly accessing shared systems, every incident was a gamble. There was no security framework, no onboarding or offboarding process for contractors, and no one accountable for the overall health of their technology. The business had simply never known any different.

    The Solution

PRETERION resolved the virus remotely using professional-grade tools — the kind the previous provider didn’t have. But the more important moment came after: rather than close the ticket and move on, PRETERION explained exactly what had happened, why the infection had succeeded, and what needed to change to prevent it happening again. The owner had never received that kind of debrief from an IT company.

Days later, PRETERION was invited to quote for ongoing support. The monthly fee was five times what the business had been paying. After a straightforward conversation about how structured IT management works — and what break-fix IT actually costs when you account for downtime, risk, and lost productivity — the owner approved it without hesitation.

That was the start of a partnership that has now run for more than 15 years.

    Before / After

    Before PRETERION:

    • Active virus incident unresolved for multiple days by incumbent provider
    • No security framework, no documented processes, no staff education
    • Break-fix support with no visibility into IT health or risk exposure
    • 80+ contractors with unmanaged system access — no formal onboarding or offboarding
    • IT spend unpredictable, reactive, and unaccounted for

    After PRETERION:

    • Virus resolved remotely in minutes on first contact
    • ITIL/ITSM-based management introduced from the first month
    • Structured contractor access management — onboarding and offboarding documented and enforced
    • Multi-year migration to an Essential 8-aligned security posture
    • Monthly reporting included — the director reviews invoices without querying them

    Benefits

    • 15+ years without a significant security incident or unplanned outage
    • Full technology coverage for 20 staff and 80+ contractors under a single managed support agreement
    • Director makes no IT or technology decision without first consulting PRETERION
    • Predictable monthly cost with full transparency — no surprise invoices
    • PRETERION service desk acts as single point of contact for all technology needs, coordinating with specialist providers where required

    Client Quote

“I stopped thinking about IT as a problem years ago. The reports come every month, the systems work, and whenever something needs a decision I know exactly who to call. That peace of mind is worth every dollar.”
